UNDERSTANDING BRAIN INJURIES

Brain injuries can be catastrophic depending on the part of the brain that was damaged and the severity of the injury. An accident victim who has suffered a serious head injury, such as traumatic brain injury (TBI), can be significantly changed and require a lifetime of care; and even less obvious brain injuries, such as closed head trauma (concussion) or mild traumatic brain injuries (MTBI), must be carefully monitored and treated in order to avoid lasting effects. In most cases, brain injuries occur when a sudden physical impact or shaking damages the brain. Common causes of TBI include:

  • Vehicle accidents, including auto accidents, drunk driving accidents, trucking accidents, motorcycle accidents, bicycle injuries, and pedestrian accidents
  • Being struck by or against something, which may occur in construction site accidents
  • Abuse and assaults
  • Premises liability cases involving slips and falls caused by dangerous property conditions

Signs of a Brain Injury

At The Gooch Firm, P.C. we have represented countless individuals who have been involved in an automotive accident.

Because a range of symptoms may accompany head injuries, and because symptoms are not always immediately apparent, TBIs and other brain injuries are often difficult to diagnose or subject to a latent diagnosis. If you or a loved one has suffered a head injury, it is important to carefully observe and document unusual behaviors, including unexplained changes in mood or sleep patterns, difficulty concentrating or performing daily tasks, and differences in any sensory functions. At the onset of any of the following signs and symptoms, immediately seek medical care and contact an experienced personal injury attorney:

  • Nausea
  • Seizure
  • Headaches or migraine headaches
  • Blurred vision, dizziness, or orientation problems
  • Anxiety, depression, irritability, or loss of initiative
  • Emotional control problems
  • Fatigue or insomnia
  • Concentration or attention problems

Unfortunately, many brain injuries are irreversible. While full functionality may not be restored in all cases, surgery and other procedures may be used to stabilize the patient and prevent further damage. Also, rehabilitation can be used to help recover lost motor or cognitive function. However, such rehabilitation treatment can take months or even years. Due to the extensive medical costs associated with traumatic brain injuries, as well as the prevalence of severe pain and suffering, we aggressively pursue the parties responsible for these injuries to ensure that our clients receive
