UTA Response to Death of a 15 Year Old Girl June 15, 2011

I make it a habit to read local and national newspapers on a daily basis. Unfortunately for every happy and uplifting article published, there is a somber and disheartening one as well. One particular article that caught my attention is an unhappy article titled "UTA Removing Sound Walls at Fatal West Jordan TRAX Crossing and 3 others," which can be found in the Deseret News or online here:

As you read through my extensive library of blogs and articles you will no doubt find that at The Gooch Firm, P.C. we are huge advocates of public safety. It is for this reason that I am compelled to write this blog and do my part to help spread safety awareness.

UTA officials are forced to respond to the death of a 15 year old girl who was struck by a TRAX train and killed on June 8, 2011. She was crossing a main four point intersection at 3200 West on UTAs Mid-Jordan line. UTA spokesman claims that she was not able to see the train coming, and subsequently she was not visible to the driver either. In an effort to correct visibility problems UTA will be removing sound barriers at 4 key sections through the end of the week. It has yet to be determined how much sound barrier panel will be removed at each location. Further evaluation of each site will need to take place.

Despite the fact that removal of these sound barriers will create more noise for residents, most are very supportive of this new safety initiative. No one can express how tragic it is that a young and innocent girl lost her life. We can however take some solace in the fact that safety is now at stronger initiative for the UTA.
