Cesarean Section Use Always on the Rise, Perhaps Overused by Hospitals
Cesarean sections are on the rise, and it doesn't look like that trend is going anywhere for a while. Most cesarean sections are utilized when natural child birth would put either the child's or mother's life at risk. Statistics are starting to show that cesarean sections are being used upon request when natural child birth could have been possible. Whether or not cesarean sections are hazardous or not is still up for wide debate in the medical world. There are however, statistics that are agreed upon by both supporters and opposers that should be noted and considered.
Most alarming of all is the fact that cesarean sections are the most commonly preformed surgeries in the United States. In fact every year for the past fifty (50) years we have broken the record for the highest number of the surgeries utilized. Apart from the relentless raise in numbers, women who have a cesarean section are more likely to necessitate one again with later child births. Everyone can agree that in some circumstances and when properly done cesarean sections can save lives. I am here to properly inform everyone in hopes that a proper decision can be made.
Cesarean sections pose a legitimate concern of danger and long term side effects. The risks for the mother can include but are not limited to:
- Women run 5 to 7 times the risk of death with cesarean sections.
- Complications before or after surgery include damage to the bladder, uterus and blood vessels. This can cause hemorrhage, the need for blood transfusions, blood clots, and infections.
- There can also be long term pain around the surgical area, and reproductive consequences such as infertility, and future miscarriages.
- Finally the mother may suffer form psychological trauma including depressions and feelings of guilt or shame.
The risks for the infant can include but are not limited to:
- Greater problems with proper breathing and breastfeeding can occur.
- About 2 of every 100 babies will be cut during surgery.
- Mothers who have a cesarean section are more likely to have problems
- Developing an attachment with the baby, and the opposite is true.
